Hi Double Chinners! I have so much I want to tell you about (including exciting revelations in the land of medical tests), but I need to get all my ducks in a row with my treatment plan and such before I fill y’all in. The good news is, I’m not dying and it’s nothing too serious and there MAY be hope in sight. Yay!
One of the things I’ve been wanting to do since starting my doctor’s reduced calorie diet is share what I’m eating. I’m actually supposed to eat 1,000 calories but after after trying 1,000 for two days and feeling stabby, I decided to up it to 1,100. Here’s what I ate today:
Breakfast was a 30g protein drink and 1/4 cup raspberries, 190 calories. Since I’m not a meat lover, I reaaaaally need to keep up on protein to prevent me from eating the stuffing out of my couch. The protein helps keep the hunger at bay and the low-sugar drink is actually pretty tasty.
Lunch time is where I try to get a little bit creative. If I don’t have my salty and sweet element, something feels off. So today I had one cup of Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad (50 calories per serving), Mini Pita (70 calories for two), Celery Sticks (15 Calories), a plum (46 calories), and 1/2 of a kiwi (17 calories). That’s a 198- calorie, super-filling lunch. (Oh. And. I was at the grocery store and for some reason, a diet coke with lime sounded amazing. I had 1/2. I’m trying to stay off soda but I figure with such a tight calorie budget, having a 0-calorie ‘splurge’ is no big deal.)
Next up is not a common treat, but a treat nonetheless! My bestie Jason came up for the day and we decided to get some Yogurtland frozen yogurt. I got cheesecake and dutch chocolate frozen yogurt with a dollop of whipped cream, chocolate chunks and cookie dough bits. This treat came in at a whopping 360 calories — whoops! Next time I know to keep it lighter on the toppings, as the yogurt is about 25 calories per ounce.
Dinner was super delicious and also very low calorie. I put four boneless skinless chicken breasts in the crock pot, let it cook on low for 7 hours, and then I shredded the chicken with a fork. I sauteed bell peppers and onions on a reaaaaally hot cast iron pan with some lime juice to get a nice sear, and then I added a few chunks of avocado and fresh tomato and voila! A delicious, low calorie dinner. The tortillas were 110 per two, 140 for the 4 ounces of chicken, 120 for the avocado and 50 for the bell peppers – a 420 calorie dinner.
This whole day of eating actually comes in at 1,170 calories, more than my goal, but doing a run today helped me burn 235 calories, making me about at what I should be eating. I haven’t figured out yet if I need to be super precise and only eat 1,100 calories exactly and not factor in exercise, but this amount of food felt “right” to leave me satisfied yet not overstuffed. I feel like this is a good representation of my average eating, but the frozen yogurt is definitely a treat. While it was delicious, it doesn’t fit with my whole goal of eating clean, which eliminates sugar and corn syrup and all that jazz.
So what do you think — if you had to eat this, how would you feel? Happy? Sad? Stuffed? Starved? Let me know and then tell me what you ate today!
I would SO be strangling someone if that was ALL I could eat for the day. Not that everything doesn’t look delicious … it just doesn’t look like nearly enough food. I’ve been trying (and mostly failing) to stick to about 1,600 calories a day. Take away another 500 and — no way.
I’m glad it’s working for you, though. Keep up the great work.
LOL yupppppp. Thanks for commenting Arlene! <3

Happy to help you all.
Thank you,
I could probably get by on 1100 calories, but I think I’d end up being hangry all the time, especially if I couldn’t eat back some of my exercise calories.
HANGRY! YES! Best word ever.
That’s what I thought until starting intermittent fasting and keeping my calorie intake at 1100. I play tennis and that burns about 700 cal a day and then I also go for runs/lift weights daily burning an extra 500. I’m 5’3 and 125. My bmi and fat percentage are very normal and I don’t ever feel like I’m starving. I begin my day with lots of tea, start eating at 1 and finish my last meal at 8. I haven’t lost any weight but love the lifestyle. It just works for me. People keep saying it’s dangerous and one can’t survive with only 1100 a day but it’s been 5 years and I’m the farthest from starving to death.
The first week after my oral surgery, I was averaging about 1,100 calories a day, much of that from high-protein/low-sugar shake drinks, but I wasn’t allowed any sort of vigorous exercise. (Or really any exertion at all.) I don’t know how I would have done if I’d thrown in a 45 minute moderate walk or – worse yet! – a 30 minute jog on what I was eating then. I’m diabetic and I’m pretty sure that my diet that week combined with burning 2-300 calories through exercise would send my blood sugar way low.
I have to say, I thought it would be more miserable than it is. I definitely have to restrain myself but I felt satisfied somehow yesterday.
Best lo-cal/high protein breakfast ever: take 1/2 of a 100 calorie englisg muffin (50) toast it, spread a laughing cow cheese triangle (35) on it, top with a scrambled egg (70) and a spoonful of salsa (15)– voila! tasty, filling breakfast for only 170 calories
That sounds delicious! How did you get so smart and awesome?
eeehhh….years of disordered eating did leave me with some highly creative/filling meals. Silver lining???? haha (not that we should joke about such things, but WHATEVER! lol) If you need more, let me know in a text or FB message and I’ll guide you through the wonderful world of ULCD recipes.
Wow! Yes more ideas please Julie! For lunch and dinner 😌😫
I’m 40 pounds overweight and am at risk of diabetes and this is the first time I’m going on a diet..i live in india, and we are yet to fully understand calorie counting. Please please help (i know this post is years ago)
The size of these meals makes me sad. Props to you for at least keeping them interesting.
LOL I know… Thumbelina meals!
When I was in El Paso I (obviously) ate A LOT but I tried to maintain a healthy breakfast, at least. I had some vanilla flavored greek yogurt with mixed berries and a cup of naked juice. BEST BREAKFAST! Dairy has a small amount of protein so that should help 🙂
Anyway, seeing how many calories you eat in one day scares me to think what I’m eating. In my family, pasta is like air so I’m having a hard time not eating any!
Nope…I definitely couldn’t do it. I eat about 1800 cals a day depending on the needs of my body. I think if I was restricted to 1000 or 1100 cals I would a) not have enough energy to workout b) have a great defense lined up in case i lost it and attacked the doctor telling me to eat that.Lol! However, you did a great job with your meals. You made 1100 cals look good.
It looked like a good amount of food, but it wasn’t many calories, you did good with your planning. I tend to eat around 1600 a day (when I am being good!!)
I couldn’t do 1100 calories a day. I’m way too active, not to mention too many temptations at work (I work for Panera)! Kudos to you for doing it though!
Thats awesome, you made it look quite easy – I recently tried to go to a 1400 calorie diet and realized that getting those proportions right is more difficult than i thought.
(I think the problem is before I never really thought it through!)
Anyhow great job making it happen for you, Im going to try get it right again too myself!
Awesome meal ideas thank u!!! Did u/were u trying to lose weight? If so how much? Thank u:)
I think id be stuffed, i usually snack through out the day but i usually eat between 400 to 1000 calories a day
I am over 300 lbs, and have high blood pressure. I am on a low calorie, high protein diet of about 700-900 calories a day. It’s day 2 already…and I am starving. I think you are eating far better than I am. 🙂

To lose wait, I actually need to eat 1500 calories. How I do it:
I fast untill the later afternoon (around 4pm) to have a small meal (500 calories). This consists out of a Protein Shake and a handfull of dates (very very very satiating). This keeps me very full untill dinner.
Then I have a huuuuge dinner of 1000 calories. After that, I sleep like a baby 🙂
Fasting is not for everyone. For me, it’s very very very easy because I’m not a pussy like most people who whine about a growling stomach (grow some balls you pussies :P).
I drink carbonated water and coffee. This blunts the hunger really really really well.
Thank you so much! I need more ideas. I love the way you keep it simple. Be blessed! @ 233 lbs… and yes I can eat your simple way.
you are so cool!!!!!
