How’s it going? I know I’ve been gone for awhile, but I’m back! I’ve been super busy the past few weeks traveling around the country for work, helping kick cancer’s butt with the 3-Day. I’m lucky that I find the work I do immensely fulfilling, and I spent many long weekends hearing and telling people’s stories. Love, love, love it!

Being on the road when you’re in a perpetual state of trying to lose weight can be challenging. In addition to working long hours, there’s the fact that you have a per diem, and sometimes, the only food around you in the area in which you’re traveling is fast food like Popeyes. (And I’m not going to lie – I do find a buttery Popeyes biscuit quite delicious.) While I was in Michigan and Minnesota for work, I tried to just tell myself that I could make an unhealthy decision if there didn’t seem to be any other options, but that I needed to make up for it with exercise. And exercise, I did! My job while out on the road is very active: as I’m documenting people doing the 60-mile walk, I also get a fair amount of walking in. At one point, I walked 11.25 miles in one day! I tried to stay away from too many of the delicious snacky items like potato chips, and tried to nom on fruit whenever possible.

Happily, my efforts weren’t in vain, because when I got back from my last trip, I had an endocrinology appointment to see how everything was going. I hadn’t weighed since a month prior, and I’m happy to report I’m down another six pounds! This is roughly 22 – 25 pounds since the beginning of this year, and while it’s slow progress (sometimes only two pounds lost per month), this is PROGRESS. As I’ve written about before, weight loss is challenging as is, and then add a double dose of PCOS and thryoid crap, and you’ve got a perfect storm for frustration after lots of good effort. However, I’ll take it. I feel like I’m finally in a groove again with weight loss, realizing that if something doesn’t taste worth it, I don’t need to eat it, AND, that if I stick to my PCOS medication regularly, that will help keep me on track. I sometimes avoid it because it makes me nauseous, but I’m starting to see that it’s an important ally for me in the weight loss war.

I’ll be taking some new progress pictures hopefully sometime this week, but when the nurse at the doc’s office told me my weight, I had a sudden burst of victorious glee. I know that I still have a long, long, long way to go, but every day and every choice that I make can help put me just one tiny step closer to the person and place I want to be :)

 

My new jet setter life style

Hello everyone! I’m currently on my way back to Los Angeles after a week working on site in San Francisco. I’m sardine canned between two lovely people- one reading the wall street journal and the other snoring with his mouth hanging open. It’s exciting.

I get home for a couple hours to re-pack, grab my hubby, and then we’re both off to Baltimore for Fitbloggin, where I’ll be meeting up with people who’ve already completed their weight loss journey and those like me who are just starting. I can’t wait to sweat in the mini trampoline fitness class, try out my new shoes from Reebok, hear speakers like Skinny Emmie and enjoy evenings with my hubby, who will be exploring DC in the daytime.

Here’s a quick update for the week- my weight is holding steady at 11 pounds down, and while I didn’t exercise this week, I did make lots of solid lunch choices like these: salads, veggie tortilla-less burrito, veggie enchiladas, and fresh fruit for snacks.

Next week will calm down for a couple days and then it’s back on the road for a few days to celebrate hubby’s birthday. I’m looking forward to getting back into the gym routine next week and sleeping in my own bed! Watch for a new update tomorrow about Fitbloggin’!

Grad School Diet

See above? That’s what I ate yesterday and today. I’m not proud about it, but it’s reality. It’s what working 9 hour days and then going to class for three hours will do to you. I’ve been averaging one large meal a day, and when I look at days like today, I’m not eating enough. Even a fatty fat bomb meal like a cheeseburger and fries is not enough… to sustain my body to get through a long, taxing day.

My body runs best on lean proteins, whole grains and fresh vegetables – and I bet yours does too. I have two more weeks of crazy stress coming – including one 40-poem, 20-page poetry anthology to write, and one 20-page theory on Mass Communication theory in regards to the Tunisian uprising. Then, I will have a glorious month off, in which I will get back to the gym, cook yummy meals, blog more, practice relaxing, and spend time with my sweet husband who is often a grad school widow.

My dinner tonight. Sigh!

I need to find a way to incorporate healthy eating into my busy day to day life, wether it’s grabbing more fruit or stocking up on fiber-rich bars. My first priorities lately have been work and school and not my health, and that bothers me. I need to take care of me to do the best I can at both work and school. So for the next two weeks, I’ll work hard, but also work hard on taking care of me. And that means less Slim Fast and pop chips, and more veggies, water and gym time.
