Step by Step

On Saturday, Matt and I headed out to Charmlee Wilderness Park for a hike. Charmlee is nestled in the Santa Monica mountains, and hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the coast, complete with crashing waves and bird’s eye views of millionaire mansions.


I had been looking forward to a nature retreat — where the only tweets I’d be interacting with were from real live birds. I was also excited to log some miles towards my 3-Day training, as I’m now to the point where I need to be totaling at least nine miles a week. The hike started out perfectly — not too hard, not too hot, not too many people. I played with my new camera, stopping to photograph buzzing bees and the occasional bumbling butterfly.


We did two miles easily, enjoying the relatively flat trail. On the second part of the loop, we decided to explore a few trails we hadn’t tried before. I got nervous when the trail started leading us way down into the valleys of the hills, because I knew that what goes down must goes up.


The hills started climbing. I put one foot in front of the other, determined, triumphant. Surely my walk training counted for something. 3 miles done. I was doing fine. And then all of a sudden I wasn’t. It was like I hit a wall. I was hot, thirsty, and tired. I was out of breath. I was sweaty. I suddenly felt the weight of every single extra pound I carry, the pounds I’ve carried for many, many years. I wanted to stop. I wanted to give up.


I had no choice. If I decided to stop hiking at that very minute, no bus, train, plane, car, horse, Rapunzel braid or carrier pigeon was coming to pick me up. No bike would suddenly materialize by my side. No rope would cascade down the side of the mountain to help me hoist myself up its side. I had no choice but to keep going.


So I did. I put one foot in front of the other. I took small steps and deep breaths. I battled the voice in my head that was telling me I couldn’t do this. I kept going. Because I had to. Because I had no choice. I asked Matt to take these pictures, because I wanted to show you the struggle. Finally, I saw the parking lot below us. At that point we had made it five miles, and I smiled.


All that sweat, all that struggle. All a reminder that the best I can do is just take this journey step by step, and slowly, but surely, I will succeed.






Confession time: Exercise Edition

Tonight I was lamenting how I feel like I have blogger’s block lately – and to my credit I’ve been very, very busy with starting a new job, traveling for said new job, working on my thesis, and just living life in general. So, the blogger’s block is pretty much just from exhaustion, not wanting to quit my blog or anything, so no worries! Matt suggested I blog about exercise, and I felt myself cringe because that would mean a CONFESSION. Dun, dun, dun. So here it is – a confession.

I haven’t exercised in… a really long time. Like more than a couple weeks. Like, the last time I can remember was some time in early August, probably when my grad school buddy Virginia and I hit up water aerobics. I have no good reason, because everybody in the world is really busy, and I need to make time for it. But there’s just something about actually DOING IT that gets in the way. Maybe it’s having to dig for a sports bra, and then finding the stretchy capris that don’t give me a wedgie, and then having to find socks, and then having to put on shoes, and then having to actually exercise and deal with the sweat and the out of breathness and the tiredness. But see, those are all excuses, because we all know nine times out of 10 you finish a workout feeling great.

In an effort to make exercise a little less tiresome and daunting, I decided to purchase a used Wavemaster Boxing Bag. It was $35 on Craigslist, and really, truly the only exercise I have ever enjoyed is boxing. I haven’t used it yet, but it’s waiting in the backyard for the first day that’s less than 100 degrees. I figure even if I can get out there for a measly 10 minutes every now and then and work up a sweat, it’s better than what I’m doing now, which is nothing. (Cringe).

Whew. Ok. I feel better now that everything’s out in the open. Now I just need to do a weigh in post too – I’ll shoot for one early next week. Surprisingly, for a week of eating restaurant food, I weighed in only a couple pounds up. I’ll be back on track these next few days so I have a good reliable number to report back. So – it’s your turn now. Anything to confess?

Weekly Weigh In

Hi everybody! How was your weekend? Mine was awesome and very busy with seeing Dark Knight (surprisingly loved it – I’m not a big action movie person but I really liked the storyline), attending my sweet friend Amy’s bridal shower, getting a mani/pedi with my buddy Jenny, and then heading to Pasadena to have dinner and birthday drinks with our girl Hilda. It was a super social weekend and jam packed with fun. I haven’t done a weigh in post in awhile because I figured you all see the ticker on the right hand side of the page, but it seemed like a good time to check in with you all!

As of this morning I’m holding steady at 7 pounds lost – not as far along in my weight loss journey as I’d like, but certainly better than losing nothing or worse – gaining! There’s one major obstacle standing in my way. I’m getting better and better with the eating, especially portion control – but what I’m struggling with is exercise. By the time I get home from work and clock some thesis hours, I’m too tired and lazy to go to the gym. Does anyone have any tips for me? I have my gym bag packed and in my car so tomorrow on my way home from work I can go right to the gym, and with my new job, I have no excuse because I will seriously drive right past it. I’ve also debated exercising in the morning, as I’ve heard that getting that early morning endorphin rush can help set the tone for a great day. Any early bird fitness freaks out there? What do you think?

I know if I can get my butt back into gear, the weight will start sliding off. Today I had a major “WHOA” moment when I realized Matt and I head to Thailand in 4 short months and 23 days! I have about 14 pounds to lose until my first mini goal, so I think that’s a reasonable amount of time to safely and slowly shed that weight without having to abandon some of my favorite things. I’ll already be celebrating two major things in December – my 10 year dating anniversary with my husband, and graduating with my MA. How awesome would it be to celebrate those things just a little bit healthier and with a little more energy? Sounds awesome to me.
