What I Ate Wednesday!

Hello everybody! Today I’m participating in the “What I ate Wednesday: Summer Staples” version. I’m traveling for work so my eating has been a little wacky -thankfully as I prepared for this post though I realized it hasn’t been too bad!

What I ate today!

I started the morning with my “Summer Staple” of yogurt. I’ve been obsessed with Greek yogurt for awhile, but since I’m back in the North bay, I treated myself to some organic Clover Stornetta cream top. Clover Stornetta is a local creamery from my hometown of Petaluma, so I always love to support their dairy when I’m in the area. It’s so tasty and that little bit of extra cream is super decadent and feels like a nice morning treat. I also had some English breakfast tea and a plum (not pictured).

One of the benefits of working for a techy company is free lunch! Today I ordered traditional curried chicken tenders with grilled vegetables over basmati rice. The flavors were amazing – simple yet exotic, and the little bit of spice was great for this cold I have that just won’t go away. (Any tips for me?! I’ve tried Emergen-C, sleep, dayquil, tea, honey and lemon, rain dancing…)

I had a cup of fresh mixed berries as a snack – perfect fuel for energy without being too heavy or sugar-dense.

I worked late and came back to my studio searching high and low for delivery since I was too lazy to walk anywhere (truth). I finally found a highly-rated Chinese place and ordered spicy green beans with chicken and vegetable chowmein. I was too stuffed to hack into the chow mein after my spicy green beans, but I did eat two fortune cookies with some Oolong tea.

It was a yummy day of food, and if there’s anything I can thank this cold for, it’s that my appetite is not its usual guns-a-blazing. I’m still eating plenty, but I’m focusing on the right portion sizes and trying to remember to balance out protein, vegetable and starch. High 5 for healthy eating while out of town! How’s your week going, food wise?

Weekend Wrap Up!

Toffee at rocket fizz

Hey everybody! I had so much fun this weekend, despite the 102 degree heat in my hometown…  Friday night, Matt and I had dinner at our favorite local Indian food place, Clay Oven. I ordered Matar Paneer in honor of my paneer-flop from the night before. It was deeeeelicious! After dinner, we went next door to Rocket Fizz, a soda and candy shop! We sampled a couple different types of toffee and I tried a low-cal rootbeer, sweetened with honey. It was only 30 calories and so refreshing to try a soda made with natural ingredients as opposed to buckets of aspartame, nutrisweet, sucralose, etc.

Pre-lobster snoozing on the sand

On Saturday, I went to water aerobics with my buddy Virginia and did some aqua-cardio for an hour. The fun in the sun didn’t stop, because Matt and I headed out to Zuma beach in Malibu where he boogie-boarded in the waves while I read and accidentally fell asleep on the sand. Note to self, and helpful hint for everyone else: If there is even a SLIGHT possibility that you will fall asleep on the beach, RE-APPLY SUNSCREEN. I am stupidly suffering from my mistake and cringing every time the crease of skin behind my knee cap moves, which is often. My legs seriously look like I’m wearing red tights, and the best part is how white my bum is in comparison. My lower half looks like a peppermint. No, it’s not sexy. Who says wisdom comes with age?

After the beach we went and saw Beasts of the Southern Wild, which is a very interesting film. Slightly depressing, but really interesting to see and learn about the people of Louisiana who live in the impoverished “bathtub” and choose to live free from modern civilization. It was a phenomenal acting job by the 5-year-old who played “Hushpuppy”, but it’s not a movie I’d pick again for a feel-good Saturday night flick.

Shelley and I rock the golden togas

Today, we went to a Golden Christmas in July party! My sweet friend Merrie hosted with her friends Brian and Erin at their gorgeous house in Thousand Oaks. The party was catered with amazing turkey, ham, roast potatoes and cheeses, and I kept well hydrated on the free flowing lemonade and iced tea. Because my friend Shelley is a creative genius, she came up with these gold togas and hair flowers for the party. Aren’t we cute? She’ll be selling homemade toffee soon… it’s out of this world, you can bet I’m going to link it as soon as her site is up!

Sweet, sweet watery relief.

One of the highlights of the party, besides the wonderful people and amazing food, was the crystal clear pool. I waded in and it felt like a chorus of angels singing sweet cooling relief to my sun-chapped calves. Don’t I look ecstatic? At this point Shelley and I had changed out of our stylish gold togas, because while as glittery and beautiful as they were, we quickly learned that Lamé does not breathe. It was a fabulous party, and after several hours I had to peel myself away from the cheese tray and head back to the ‘burbs to work on my thesis.

This weekend was jam packed with fun times, and while I had some food challenges (cheese tray, popcorn, birthday cake), I didn’t majorly overdo it and managed to squeeze in some exercise. I’ll be posting a weight-in post soon, but if you’ve been following the My Fitness Pal counter on the side of the blog, I’m down about 7 pounds when the scale is accurate kind to me. The past week has been a little wacky and I’ve been yo-yoing a  bit, but I think that’s more due to some salty choices and weird heat than actual weight gain, because my jeans are feeling loose. (I LOVE that feeling. Such a good feeling.)

Anyways, thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful week! I start my new job tomorrow, so send me some happy first day vibes, please! 🙂 What did you do this weekend that was fun?

Weekly Weigh In #2

No trumpet fanfare this time. 🙁 Yup. I weighed in on Saturday and lost a massive…. .2 pound. Not even half of a pound. .2 of a pound. As Matt said, “That’s a fart.”

I ate healthy things like Greek salad this week.

I was pissed. Like “wailing on the punching bag so good that the teacher complimented on my super strong jabs in kickboxing class” pissed. I weigh in before my boxing class on Saturday mornings on my gym. I worked out and seethed about the fact that I tracked EVERYTHING, from the handful of Doritos to the dinner of nothing but popcorn the night I saw Harry Potter. I tracked the good, the bad, and the ugly, thanks to the little pop-up reminders on my iPhone. The temptation to cheat was strong, to lie and think that I really had 1.5 cups of pasta and track 1. But I knew cheating on tracking would only be cheating myself.

I love boxing.

How did I react to my lackluster weigh in? I ate. I pigged out. I didn’t track anything yesterday. I had an Indian dinner with my gal pals and we enjoyed a very rich meal. I scarfed a samosa, butter chicken, matar paneer, white rice, naan, a chai latte and a giant coconut frozen yogurt with dark chocolate chips. I did EXACTLY what I need to learn to avoid. I need to learn how to not let a small letdown turn into a big fat snowball avalanche of “Screw it, I’ve already messed up, might as well eat whatever I want.” Any tips?

I’m still disappointed about my lack of a loss but I think I’ve figured out what it could be. I tracked everything, and used my weekly points in addition to activity points. Even though I was within my points allotment, I made some bad choices this week, like salty, greasy things that didn’t pack as much of a punch as leafy greens or lean proteins would have. When I did lose weight on Weight Watchers the last time I tried it, I  didn’t usually use my flex points or activity points. I know my body just well enough to know that the tiniest little screw up can equal a disappointment at the scale. So next week, I’ll be measuring. I’ll be using the recipe builder. I’ll be staying away from the Doritos and movie theatre popcorn. I’m giving myself a fresh start tomorrow. I’m also going to step up my cardio, because I only made it to the gym twice last week.

I’m also going to avoid eating salty food the night before my weigh in. Because somewhere in the cavernous depths of my mind, I’d like to think that I really DID lose weight this week, but the loss was just… lost, among water retention and bloating. Next week, weight loss, you will be mine!!!!!!
