Random Thursday Thoughts

Hi guys! Um – Tomorrow I’m going to THAILAND! I am so excited it’s not even funny. The past week has been a flurry of packing, cleaning, getting travel shots and little errands here and there. It will be so nice to just relax for two weeks with no thoughts of thesis or work or chores or any of that! That said, I have a line up of amazing guest bloggers for you guys, so please be sure to come back and keep reading the Double Chin Diary while I’m gone. Show them some comment love! I’ll also check in once or twice with some pictures!

So, after a 1 pound gain, my total for the goal of Thailand Twenty is that I lost a total of 10.6 pounds! I’m disappointed it’s not twenty, but realistically, 10 pounds is great! 10 pounds is a lot! I’m not going to “give up” on my trip, but ease up a little bit on what I’m eating – because everybody deserves a vacation. Plus, Matt and I have a lot of activity planned – like hiking ancient temples in Chiang Mai, snorkelling in the crystal waters of Krabi and strolling through the streets of Bangkok. I’ll actually probably be a lot more active on this trip than I am during my usual 8-5.

Here’s a couple random thoughts I had this week:

photo 2[1]I struggled this week with Holiday eating. When I saw this giant ice cream cone, I had to take a picture because I feel like this week I’ve been a bottomless pit. I saw this and the first thing I thought was “YES. ROCKY ROAD.” I used to be obsessed with icecream, but now I’ll buy a tub and it sits in our freezer for weeks until it’s so freezerburned I have to throw it out. But my sugar cravings this week were through the roof – probably from doing low-carb for a few weeks.

Rocking a doggy dalmation print.

Rocking a doggy dalmation print.

I feel like despite my struggles with my weight, I’ve gotten more bold about clothing choices thanks to people like The Curvy Fashionista. Remember a couple months ago I blogged about how I’d love to own this dalmation sweater? Well, I was at Old Navy with pal Sally and I thought, why the heck not?! Here I am rockin’ it, and feeling good. It’s funny that I felt “wild” in something as simple as a dalmation print sweater, but I felt confident in it and was proud I took a step out of my fashion comfort zone.A couple of years ago I would have never worn skinny jeans, calf boots OR a dalmation print sweater. So yes, woohoo for fashion risks!

Balance Ball Chair!

Balance Ball Chair!

Santa came early this year because of our trip, and look what Santa (Matt) brought me! Since I work from home I can be a little more unique with my workspace, and I was dying to try one of these balance balls. I feel like I have a weak core, and I know this chair will help make me strong like a tree trunk. Plus, who doesn’t want their very own bouncy ball?! When I get back I’ll give a full report on how my new bubble-butt chair is treating me.

Showing off my chike and purple manicure!

And lastly… when I get back, I have a great giveaway coming up from Chike! I recently tried Chike’s chocolate meal replacement shake, and dang, this stuff was good. You know how most powdered drinks have that chalky kind of grainy thing going on? Not this one. I mixed it with some cold milk and it was almost like drinking a milk shake. Works for me! So stay tuned and at the new year we’ll have a great giveaway package from them!

Well guys – I’m out! Thanks so much for reading! It means a lot to me and April to know that we’re not alone on our journey and that you’re out there cheering us on. I hope you have an amazing holiday season!

What I Ate Wednesday!

Hey everybody! Today I’m participating in a link up called #WIAW – What I Ate Wednesday!

I started the day with some Special K Red Berries with milk and a sliced banana. I’m not a huge cereal person, but this was on sale at the store and I’ve been getting sick of my Greek yogurt/English muffin combination. This was tasty and light enough not to weigh me down.

Breakfast

I have a couple days off before I start my new job, so I cleaned ALL DAY. Whew. If you ever want to work your booty off, bust out the shop vac and start sucking up the corners of your house. I never knew that much cat hair/spider webs/dust was possible. (Yeah, yeah, I know – who has a day off and cleans? This girl.) When I was sweaty and gross from cleaning, I had some lunch… a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with a side salad with fat free ranch.

Lunch

Then I did some errands and some more chores before having a mid-afternoon snack of rainier cherries and a Hansen’s soda. Rainier cherries may be prettier than Bing, but I don’t think they’re any tastier. I’ll stick with my blood-red cherries, thank you very much.

Cherries and Soda

Dinner was a little bit of a treat – something way heavier than I usually eat. Matt and I picked up some sourdough bread from Boudin on our way home from Lake Tahoe, and we paired it with Italian beef with sweet peppers. I grew up eating this Chicago classic – a pot roast cooked all day in a crock pot with onions, green peppers, garlic and Italian seasonings. Spoon it over some toasted bread with melted cheese and you’re in Heaven. This sandwich came in at about 475 calories… high, but worth every bite.

Then, Matt and I watched the first episode of this season’s Breaking Bad… (OMG! Anyone else watch?! CRAZZZZZY!) and then I needed some dessert. I settled on this mini Cadbury Caramello ice cream bar at 160 calories.

I ended the day with 97 calories leftover, and I’m pleasantly full. Today was a good example of how eating for weight loss doesn’t always have to be a drag – I got to eat plenty of food that was delicious and yummy and stayed within my calorie count. I’ll now be weighing in Fridays at my awesome RD’s suggestion (my weekend bloat can screw up my whole “healthy eating” mindset if I weigh in on a Monday). I’ve also gotten some good workouts in this week, so I’m excited to see what next week’s weigh in looks like!

So, now it’s your turn – what did you eat on Wednesday? If you want to blog it, visit Peas and Crayons and don’t forget to link up!

Birthday Weekend Treats & Eats – And a weigh in!

CAAAAAKE!

Hello All! I know I promised to talk about the delicious food I consumed over my birthday weekend, so without further ado, let’s dive right in, right? Good thing looking at pictures of delicious things doesn’t add calories…

Mexican Fiesta!

My parents hosted a Mexican fiesta the day before my birthday to celebrate four birthdays in the family, and two retirements. There were all sorts of Mexican nibbles, like chips and guacamole, Atomic Buffalo Turds (smoked jalapenos stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon), Carnitas, Carne Asada, Smoked Chicken, Adobo pork, spanish rice, two kinds of tortillas, and sweet corn. My father in law made amazing enchiladas, too!

Allison's beautiful and delicious cake!

And what kind of birthday would it be if there wasn’t cake? We had the Costco cake, above… and then my brother’s sweet girlfriend Alison made me this delicious berry and vanilla bean cream cake. It was fabulous, and convinced me I need to buy real vanilla beans to bake with, because they added such a yummy taste and texture.

I went to bed with a very full tummy, and I knew I didn’t do a very good job controlling myself around the deliciousness. There may or may not have been a late night chips and guacamole binge after some champagne and wine….

Cookie dough ice cream at Lalas

The next day was no different, but this time, we mixed it up and had dinner at the inlaws. But of course, what kind of birthday would it be if I didn’t have any ice cream? While walking around downtown Petaluma with my sister and husband, we stopped into Lalas, a vintage ice cream parlor, and got me a dish of cookie dough ice cream. I rarely eat ice cream, but it’s such a delicious treat! This ice cream was organic and hand made in a traditional creamery style. Tasty, tasty.

Fall Apart Beef with noodles and peas, yum!

Later that night, we had dinner at the in-laws! I requested “fall- apart beef”, something Matt learned to make when we moved in together a year before we got married. It’s basically a chuck roast that’s lightly grilled to get a little color and flavor, and then cooks in red wine and onions for a loooooooong time until it’s literally falling off the bone. It’s served with egg noodles and it’s a delicious savory and rich meal. YUM!

Like I said before, I had a tough time controlling myself over the weekend – because I’m like a drug addict with delicious food – I just can’t be around it! So when I went to my nutritionist, I prepared myself for a gain. I stepped on the scale and…

I lost 1 pound.

Yeah, I don’t know how either. All I can think is that in the past few weeks while I’ve been wrapping up the semester and scurrying around at work, I haven’t been snacking as much. I pretty much eat my breakfast, lunch, dinner and a late night snack and that’s it – none of my usual afternoon snacking. It’s also been getting warmer so my appetite is just naturally a little less. I weigh in again on Wednesday, and I’m curious to see how it goes because I’ve been eating out a lot this week, but have been exercising pretty frequently.

Stay tuned – hopefully the losing trend continues. So, how about you – how do you do with eating on celebration weekend? Part of me wants to believe calories don’t count on birthdays, but I gotta keep it real and be thankful the scale didn’t reflect my total lack of care over the weekend. It was a GOOD birthday, not just because of the food – but all the yummy things didn’t hurt! :)

Have a wonderful Monday!
