Weekend Wrap Up

Hey everybody! How was your weekend? Mine was good! My sister was in town with her friend Christian, and we had a nice relaxing weekend full of gardening, good eats and hanging around having good conversations. We started it off with some funfetti cake with homemade buttercream frosting… and then we went to our favorite Cajun place for some soul food. I had fried chicken, but only made it through one piece before my stomach warned me to stop! (Again – remember that whole healthy eating and then junk food thing? Crazy!)

And then the next day, we all had dinner at Stonefire Grill, where I got this delicious grilled salad with artichoke hearts, avocado and tri-tip.

After dinner, we saw Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. This was a quirky little film with lots of typical Anderson-esque eccentricness. It’s worth seeing if you’re into sort of campy, kitschy films. After the movie we couldn’t pass up a treat at Yogurtland, where I got toasted coconut frozen yogurt topped with strawberries – my favorite!

Today we lazed around for a bit until April and Christian headed back up the coast to Northern California. I love having visitors! I didn’t do terrible this weekend with my food, but I definitely went over my calorie count on Saturday and Friday night. I’m going to guess I’ll be up a bit on the scale tomorrow, but I know the damage isn’t irreparable. To make this liveable, I have to keep in mind that it’s going to happen from time to time, especially if I am going to opt for fried chicken over a dry grilled pork chop at a Cajun restaurant (Can you blame me?). Try as I might to be a perfectionist at other areas in my life, I’m willing to take the weight loss path a little bit slower and a little bit less perfect to still enjoy eating.

However…. enjoying eating can definitely still happen with amazing, yummy, HEALTHY food.. like our dinner tonight! A grilled boneless skinless chicken breast, Israeli cous cous, and a variety of grilled vegetables. Holy deliciousness – check this out – and for only 400 calories! Yum, Yum, Yum!!!!

Weekly Weigh In – June 4th

Post-workout healthy treat - frozen yogurt with fresh fruit! Like my "I Voted" sticker?!

Hey everybody! I don’t think I’ve posted about my reality check moment last week, so I’ll start there. I met with my awesome registered dietician last week, and I had maintained my weight…which is better than a gain, but not really what I’m goin’ for. We basically talked about how if I really tried for the next week with tracking and exercise and I didn’t lose weight, we’d need to revisit some blood tests and health check ups to make sure my body wasn’t “broken”. That seemed to knock some sense in to me, and I left her office feeling determined to really TRY for the next week.

So I tracked diligently on MyFitnessPal (Friend me! I’m @lyssacurran), avoided tortilla chips, exercised, and did magical weight loss dances around the kitchen. Maybe I lied about that last part. But basically, I really TRIED last week – and the scale showed that I…

Lost 3 pounds!

This bit of success was exactly what I needed to motivate myself. I have to keep in mind that nobody ever said weight loss would be easy – but the more I do it, and the more I get used to it, the easier it will be to get into a routine and focus on the goal. I’ve been having some good breakthrough moments lately where I remind myself that I’m not losing weight to look cute in skinny jeans or shop in the Junior’s department – I’m losing weight for my HEALTH. It’s not about vanity or beauty, it’s about feeling good in the skin I’m in, and boosting my energy, reducing my risks of heart disease and diabetes, and making sure I take great care of the gift of life. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true! You never know when your number is going to be called – so I want to live life to the fullest and feel great while I do it.

How’s your week going?

Makin’ New Friends Along The Weigh

Weight loss is hard. It’s annoying, irritating, bothersome and takes up a tremendous amount of time. It’s also rewarding, sometimes. And it’s also necessary for me, so you can slap me with a trout now and I’ll shut up and move on. (If anyone gets that reference… plus 5 for you!)

Thankfully, I’ve recently learned that I don’t have to go through it alone. I’ve made some wonderful connections and friendships with people in real life and also in “online life” thanks to our shared struggles and accomplishments. On Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting two highly-esteemed and successful weight loss bloggers, Kenlie of All The Weigh and Alexa, The Curvy Nerd .

Alexa, Alyssa and Kenlie - a terrific trio!

We gathered for dinner at the local Souplantation, me arriving frazzled and flustered 15 minutes late after somehow ending up in Inglewood instead of Beverly Hills. Los Angelenos know that those are absolutely DIFFERENT parts of town… and let’s just say only I could map something out and still end up getting lost. Both of them were so friendly and welcoming right off the bat, which helped put the voice in my head that was saying “Omg! I’m late meeting new people! Especially famous weight loss blogger people! They’re going to think I’m a total flake!” at ease.

Our conversation ran the gamut – from our history with weight loss, to the blogosphere, to Hungry Girl, to the new Points Plus system, to where we’re from, to Harry Potter, to cats, to Richard Simmons, to babies. It was surreal for me to go from the online world to the in-person world, but it was so cool to meet the faces behind the voices I’ve grown to know and love. There were a lot of laughs!

Dragon Fruit, which I have aptly renamed the "Cut Up Dalmation Fruit"

After dinner, we got Yogurtland fro yo, where I tried something new… Dragon Fruit! I believe I described it as looking like “a piece of a cut up dalmation”, and the jury’s still out on wether I liked it. It was… squishy, and kind of tasted like unripe watermelon, but not half as good as a kiwi. I’ll try it again and we’ll see what happens. After Yogurtland (And this is how I know I definitely hit it off with these girls) – we wandered into Ross. Those of you who know me know that I love my discount stores – so being able to browse the random aisles of tsotchkes and useless crap with two new friends was a lot of fun!

I get to see these awesome gals again on Thursday night, where I’ll be sweatin’ to the oldies with Richard Simmons, live in the flesh! Definitely watch for the post on that, to see how I get my groove on with The Weight Saint.

Have you met online friends in person? How was it? Who would you love to meet in person? I can think of a few more people right now! 🙂
