A Popcorn Fiend’s Review: Skinny Pop Popcorn

Picture to show scale. This is a giant bag, folks!

This week while husband and I roamed around Costco (him begging me to hurry up, me  distracted by 10,000 bars of soap and a barrel of cheetos as big as my head), I spotted a new face in the snack section. It lay gleaming in a bin like a shiny, oversized pillow – but it was filled with popcorn! And not just any popcorn … SKINNY POPCORN!

Those of you who have been following my blog for awhile know how much I love popcorn, so I’m kind of an expert on this topic. I bought the bag for a mere $4.99 for a sack that shamefully only lasted three days (Don’t worry – I had help), and I want to share my findings with you!

1) Love how it doesn’t have the stale, kind of styrofoam texture that most pre-popped and bagged popcorns have. It tasted light and crunchy, and was surprisingly very fresh.

2) It’s very simple – no fake cheese powder here. Just three ingredients: sunflower oil, corn, salt. Tasty and not loaded with preservatives. Two thumbs up.

135 calories for lots of crunchin'!

3) The best part was, I could have a gigantic bowl for only 135 calories. With me, volume is the key to satisfaction, and a nice big bowl was the perfect snack for studying that didn’t deplete my calorie balance for the day.

Skinny Pop didn’t send me anything to review or pay me for my opinion, I just felt like sharing this good find with all of you because I personally think snacks are one of the hardest parts of dieting. Maybe they’ll like this post and send me some popcorn for a giveaway for you! 😉 Check out Skinny Pop here, and if you see it, give it a try and let me know what you think!

  1. I’ve been really getting into popcorn lately too, so this is very intriguing to me. Especially the calorie vs. volume! I’m going to put this on my Costco/grocery list. Thanks for the tip.

  3. Tried skinny pop for the first time last night. So when I googled it, I found your blog. Don’t you think 8 grams is a lot of fat for popcorn? I JUST noticed that on your blog.

    • 8 grams IS a lot- and I should probably write a new post about it, because when I brought it into my dietitian (after I wrote this) she noticed that too and said that’s why it tastes so good! Thanks for pointing that out!

  5. I bought Skinny Pop at Costco last week. I found that same big bag and my sister had told me how good it was. Went back today to get another bag and, no Skinny Pop. I asked the customer service desk and they tell me that they aren’t sure they are going to carry it. He indicated that they were in negotiations. $4.99 is a great deal for this stuff as the small bags are very expensive.

  6. Very bad news – went to buy my Costco size bag, there was none, zilch, zero. Supervisor told me Costco no longer carrying – going to carry a new version of it by Annie’s brand!!!!! No…… say it isn’t so. It might be healthier, but I’m pretty sure won’t taste as yummy. Curse you Annie! And shame on you, Costco. They always get me to fall in love with their unique product, then discontinue it. Such a tease they are…. :-/

    • You can still get Skinny Pop at most Walgreens – though not the giant size bags Costco carried- just the small individual ones for approx. 99cents a bag and the 4 oz. for $3.99 – much more expensive but so much better than the ones loaded with salt!!!

      • Thanks for the tip, Susan! I found a bunch of the mini bags at Costco a month or so ago, but you’re definitely right that they’re not doing the big bags anymore.

  7. ohhh I”m going to have to try this. I just bought “smart pop popcorn” and i’m concerned it’s going to taste like poo. Thanks for the info. I”m a litle late to the party.

  8. Be careful with “Skinny Pop”… it claims to be many good things on the package, but the reality is they refuse to disclose the real ingredients in their products.

It’s hyped on the package as natural and healthy, free from this and that. Sounds too good to be true, and probably is.

When I contacted them to find out the actual ingredients in their “White Cheddar Flavor” they refused to disclose this information, saying it’s “botanical” and a “trade secret”.

I’m allergic/intolerant to a lot of things, which sucks, so I absolutely have to know what I’m eating, every ingredient. I was so excited to find Skinny Pop, as there’s so little I can eat, and at first it appeared to be free from virtually everything bad.

But any food manufacturer that refuses to disclose any ingredients is hiding something. And food labeling laws in the USA permit this. Don’t believe what you read on packages folks, it’s all talk. If you care about what you’re eating, don’t eat this stuff, you don’t know what’s in it.

  9. If you are like hot popcorn, and don’t mind using a microwave, Jolly Time Healthy Pop Butter is FABULOUS!!
ONLY 2g Fat and 110 Calories for 5 CUPS!!!! THE WHOLE BAG!!

And it’s not chewy and weird with no flavor like a lot of low fat microwave popcorn. Crunchy and lightly salted, no fake butter taste. My favorite popcorn by far. Better than any other brand. And no, I am not paid to say this and I didn’t get any free popcorn!

  10. Potato chips have the same amount of calories per 28g serving as skinny pop….Its not really that healthy its popcorn that’s friend in oil just like potato chips.
